БЛЭКТОН (Blackton), Джеймс Стюарт - американский режиссёр и продюсер.

Родился в Англии. С 1885 жил в США. С середины 90-х гг. был карикатуристом в газете «Ивнинг уорлд».

В 1897 снял свой первый фильм «Вор на крыше». Постановщик фильма «Срывая испанский флаг» (1898), пропагандирующего милитаристские идеи на материале испано-американской войны 1898.

В 1899 Блэктон основал (совместно с А. Смитом и У. Роком) фирму «Вайтограф». Будучи долгое время единственным режиссёром, а затем и художественным руководителем фирмы, Блэктон определял её репертуар. Снимал короткометражный фильмы самых различных жанров: детективные («Рафлз, взломщик-любитель», 1905, по роману Хорнунга), экранизации литературных произведений («Ромео и Джульетта», «Макбет», «Ричард III», 1908, по Шекспиру), пышные исторические драмы («Наполеон», 1909, «Жизнь Моисея», 1910) и др. Был одним из пионеров графической мультипликации («Комические выражения смешного лица», 1906, «Магическая самопишущая ручка», 1907).

Наибольшим успехом пользовались реалистические фильмы «Сцены из повседневной жизни» (1908-12), поставленные Блэктоном. Эти фильм вызвали огромное количество подражании, особенно в Европе. В годы 1-й мировой войны Блэктон снова выпускал милитаристские, националистические картины («Боевой клич мира», 1915, и др.).

К концу периода немого кино Блэктон отошёл от режиссуры; занимался административной и редакторской деятельностью в кино.
